You’ve searched a long time, and have desperately requested it from WordPress plugin creators – it’s finally here. You can now easily build full WordPress Dictionaries, Glossaries and References without any more effort than you already put into your existing WordPress website.
How did you help this plugin come to be?
In October 2009, I wrote a blog post about customizing your WordPress site to be used for a Dictionary. During the following years, I got a lot of amazing feedback from you. I learned how and why this would be more useful as a theme or plugin, rather than as a simple tutorial.
I didn’t understand the importance of that feedback for a long time – but you kept coming back and telling me how much this meant to you. You told me what sort of features you’d like, and even the sorts of sites you’d like to build.
This year, I made you the Dictionary plugin that will rock your world. There were hiccups and delays, but despite the hardships, I made it happen.
The Full Story of the Dictionary Plugin
It all started shortly after my brother got a Pug puppy. I had a period where I was a little crazy over the funny guy, and I had too much fun with it… I created a silly custom dictionary called “Pugtionary”.
I made a lot of customizations to WordPress to make it function as a dictionary site, but I ran into a lot of problems doing so.
I found out that I had a lot of questions about building a WordPress Dictionary, such as:
- How do you get dictionary entries to show in the right places?
- How do you show extra information like word Origins?
- How do you make it so that you don’t have to do a lot of thinking or work to add a single entry?
…essentially, I spent hours answering those questions to make it from scratch.
It occurred to me that other people might be trying to do something similar for their own sites. If I was having this much trouble, I guessed that other people did too.
Since then, WordPress has changed a bit and that made for big improvements. It was time for a better solution – something that felt native to WordPress, something that would be well documented, something that would just work how you expect it to.
The requests for a solution like that kept coming in, so I decided to go for it.

What this plugin has in store for you.
There’s a lot of features I could have included, but I didn’t want to create a confusing plugin with a big learning curve. I kept things simple and easy.
As I continue to work on this plugin I will add more features, but only if the plugin remains easy to use and is fundamentally improved by adding them.
So what does this plugin come with and allow you to do, exactly?
- The same editing process that you’re used to. No learning required!
- Automatic filtering when you add a new entry. If you add “Apple”, it will automatically show up under the section “A” with no extra work on your part.
- Provided examples show you how to use Sections and Types. These are customizable if you don’t want to use the English dictionary.
- Related entries allow you to easily link any entry to any other entries.
Documentation is provided in the “Help” drop down found in the upper right hand corner of admin pages. Video tutorials included!
- Easy-to-use shortcodes make it easy to show Dictionary Menus or individual Dictionary Entries wherever you want in your regular blog posts and pages.
- Widgets for displaying your most recent Dictionary Entries in any widget enabled area of your theme.
- Works with almost any WordPress theme. If your site is WordPress 3.0+ and follows WordPress standards, this plugin will work with your theme.
- Automatic updates to the plugin are now enabled as of Version 1.2! That means no hassle to get updates when new features are added.

No coding required!
One of the best parts of this plugin is that there’s absolutely no coding needed. You don’t need to know how to do anything fancy with your WordPress website.
For example, I included automatic filtering for you. That means when you add “Apple”, it will show up in section “A” automatically.
Less thinking and less work, because that’s how things should be.
Why shouldn’t you build a WordPress Dictionary plugin yourself?
If you have WordPress development skills or feel adventurous, you may wonder whether you should spend money on getting a dictionary plugin instead of building it yourself.
Go ahead, try making this plugin.
I am warning you: It is deceptively simple. When I first decided to build it I thought, “Wow, this plugin is easy!”
…then, I got to actually building it. There are nuances you don’t think of that make this a useful tool. How do you make sure the site magically pulls in Entries for Sections? How do you make sure that the Dictionary Entries show all the correct custom data no matter where you try to show it on the website (especially without a special theme)?
This plugin is an inexpensive solution, and development will continue based on your feedback. This plugin takes the work of fixing bugs and solving coding problems right off of your shoulders, but gives you the flexibility to build Reference websites with ease.
